Marriage (Nikkah) Services

Nikkah Ceremony

The Windsor Mosque offers services of performing marriages (Nikkah) by Sh. Mohamed Elshaikh, Aamir Zaidi, Hassan Rkie, or Sh Abdelrahman Nabil, all of whom are registered  marriage officiants in Ontario. This step is required to register marriages in the Province of Ontario.

Before contacting the Windsor Mosque for a Nikkah ceremony, please take care of the following:

1. Marriage License Document

  • Must obtain all documentation including the Marriage License from City Hall before the date of the Nikkah - only the groom or bride may obtain the license
  • The marriage officiant will not perform any Nikkah without a valid marriage license present at the time and place of the Nikkah ceremony
  • The marriage officiant will fill and sign the remaining portion of the license, give you a temporary license, and send the paperwork to the Office of the Registrar General
  • The marriage officiant will record your Nikkah ceremony into the Marriage Register Book given by the Office of Registrar General and ask both parties to sign
  • If you would like to obtain a Marriage License in Windsor, please visit the City of Windsor website below

City of Windsor - City Hall

2. Wali (Guardian) for the bride

  • A Wali is a male relative of the bride
  • For any inquiries on who can serve as a Wali, please contact the Imam

3. Two adult male Muslim witnesses

  • These witnesses must be adults
  • There is no requirement to have one witness from the bride’s side and one from the groom’s side

4. Mahr (Dowry)

  • The Mahr should be discussed and agreed upon before the Nikkah ceremony to avoid debate and save time.
  • You can choose to write the mahr into the contract if you wish

5. Identification

  • At the Nikkah, the Bride and Groom must present their Birth Certificate or Passport along with a photo ID if it is not already on the aforementioned documents.
  • The name and Date of Birth on the ID must match the corresponding information on the Marriage License.

6. Fees

Fees are to offset the costs associated with the service which includes the time of the marriage officiant, certificates, etc.

Fees are payable in cash, debit or credit card at the Treasurer Office. If the office is closed during the Nikkah, only cash payment can be left with the marriage officiant .
